This year, we invite you to post a shoutout on Instagram or Facebook to an educator who has made a significant creative impact on your life. Use the hashtags #ArtsEdWeek or #BecauseOfArtsEd and if you recognize a Harrisburg staff member, be sure to use #TigerBest. Good morning, HNMS Families - please check your inbox for an email from Mr. Fesler. If you did not receive this email, let us know! A few notes about HNMS Traffic - As our school has continued to grow since opening in 2013, so too has the amount of traffic we see during pick-up and drop-off. In order to ensure the timely flow of traffic and the safety of our learners and families, please take a few minutes to read through the following information: 1. 95th Street serves as the main access road for both Endeavor Elementary and North Middle School. There are 1200 learners and families between the two buildings, so if you are planning to drop-off and pick-up, plan extra time for the process. 2. We tend to see a significantly greater number of cars during the first couple weeks of school. 3. The peak traffic times at North are from 7:40-7:55 and 3:04-3:15. The front doors open at 7:40. The final bell of the days is at 3:04. 4. Both of the entrance lanes are considered “drop-off” lanes. Neither of them are “through” lanes. This makes limiting your speed once you have entered the parking lot and keeping your eyes open for kids walking through the parking lot a critical component for safety. 5. When dropping off your learner, please pull as far forward as you can. While dropping kids off directly in front of the door may seem like the natural thing to do, this significantly limits the flow of traffic in the parking lot. 6. The reverse holds true as well. If the line stops and you are back further, please drop your learners off when the traffic pauses rather than waiting until you are closer. 7. If you intend to use the “drop-off” lanes, it should take no more than 10-15 seconds for your learner to get out of the car and head towards the school. If you anticipate drop-off taking longer than 10-15 seconds because they need to grab something out of the trunk or you need to speak with them, park in the lot to do so. 8. Carpooling with a neighbor or two and alternating days that you drop-off and pick-up will also help to reduce the number of cars in the lot during peak times. If it is the right choice for your family and learner, encouraging your learner to walk or ride bike to school can also help to reduce the number of cars during peak times.

With every new school built over the last 20 years, the school board and administration anticipated and planned for future growth. Our most recent growth challenges are in Harrisburg proper, where new subdivisions have accelerated already rising student enrollment. Liberty Elementary is at capacity. Three of the new developments are located in the Liberty school zone, increasing the need for additional space. Last year, the Tiger Reserve program was moved to Adventure Elementary to make more room at Liberty. Additionally, Head Start and Jr. Kindergarten was moved from Liberty to Freedom. There are also four new developments currently underway in the Freedom school zone which will also push Freedom closer to capacity in the near future. The school board’s commitment has always been to build the right size at the right time, without raising the mill levy and imposing any new burdens on taxpayers. The District has been able to do this through the continued growth in property valuation with the addition of new neighborhoods and businesses coming into the community. Through the passing of bond elections, Harrisburg School District citizens have shown they value the District's foresight to stay ahead of growth and provide quality learning facilities for students. In order to maximize use of current facilities, address overcrowding, and ensure the right size is built at the right time without raising taxes, the District will be proposing a solution to build a new elementary school and convert Liberty to a joint use facility which would house Early Childhood grades and share spaces with the city of Harrisburg. A public meeting will be held Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30 PM in the Liberty Band Room located through the District Office main entrance (Entrance E). We encourage the public to attend and subscribe to our new podcast, Harrisburg 41-2, which includes the topic of growth and will address our current needs in a future episode, released in the near future.
